After trying mTurk months ago, I got discouraged with the rejections and the low pay, but having a lot of time on my hand I came back and worked a bit smarter (I'll post hints elsewhere) and it was going okay but did get a reject from p9r for trying to guess one of their awful hits. This knocked my score way down which was discouraging.

I've noticed I have hits still hanging out there for 10 days now with no sign of payment. I wrote a few of them with no results. If we have a time limit to do a hit, the requesters should have a time limit to pay and if they don't, say in 7 days, it should be auto deducted from them and the hit paid. This is though I'm careful to pick requesters that have high marks for prompt payment. I'm almost scared to ask a requester for payment lest they reject it instead. Is there anywhere where it states for each requester how long they allow themselves to pay?

Also, I've done some surveys lately where when I got to the end they said thank you we are recording your answers and never gave up the code needed to submit with. I wrote one company about it back but never heard anything back. I was able to find their hit again (this is sometimes a tricky thing to do) and left a review on turkoptican. I recently did the one where they ask you to judge facial expressions, about when I was going to hit submit it expired. They give 15 minutes for this hit so if you see it avoid it, this takes at a good pace, 20 minutes but they're supposed to allow you extra time. So I did 15 minutes of work for nothing. How do I know they didn't get my results after all and it's really their way of not paying??? It's taken me months to get 200 hits done (working about an hour a day) I'm one of those who don't understand how you get 1000 hits fast. Thoughts?

Requesters have 30 days to pay. If they don't within 30 days, it auto-approves.

I would suggest that you spend more time reading through this forum to really get a better understanding of what your expectations should be. It takes time to really learn the ropes of mturking. Never guess at this stage, always ask, or search for answers to questions already asked. You're in the right place to learn.

Also, be careful about rushing to get your numbers up at this early stage. You have to protect your rating because you have very little headroom to absorb rejections.

You can get a script (can't provide any sources at this time, sorry) that will show you the requester's auto-approve time so you have an idea of what to expect. Requestors can have an AA of minutes, hours, days, weeks, up to a max of 30 days. Most of the time the auto-approve is an outside figure for the longest it might take before it auto-approves. Always check the TO to see what the latest reviews say about how long it took for the HIT to approve. In any case, it will rarely do any good to contact a requestor about it. The work will approve or reject withn the AA time they have set.

Slow down to avoid making mistakes. It takes a while to learn how to do some of this work really quickly. I've done over 15,500 hits and I still feel like I'm slow compared to others. However, I only have 2 rejections. That's a lot of protection from any future rejections I might get. I now feel more comfortable taking some degree of risk to work faster. Focus on building a good buffer for yourself or you'll destroy your rating.

I just send a note to the requester if the survey doesn't have the code at the end... I let them know I'd like to get paid. Most have been pretty good about responding....

And, yes, don't work so fast that you click on something accidentally putting it forward. THe annoying thing is that some surveys don't have a "back" button, or any way of going back to a question you missed... If I do catch myself doing it accidentally, I contact the requester as well. Most have been pretty lenient.

I did one yesterday that I accidentally closed before Firefox completed the survey, so unfortunately, I lost that one entirely, but I've also learned not to turk when really tired!

    Hello,
I have a question regarding payments. I am a new requester and just ran a survey. However, there was an issue with the timer settings, and a couple of workers suffered from expired timer while doing the survey. The problem is that I can see their results in Qualtrics database (and they have completed the survey properly), but their Mturk unique identifiers are not present in the batch results. Is there any way to contact and pay workers who are not present in the batch output?
    Thanks!
