Alex Kronman Masters Verify ones seem to be mostly correct. I'm going to push on and try to clock out somewhere on Faith's level.

Could use some computer advice from those who are up late tonight. I have a great laptop. It's newer and does everything I ask of it. However, when I started on mTurk, I quickly decided that I'd like a desktop with dual monitor. We're broke, but hubby is a contractor and my friend's husband is a computer geek who happened to need some drywall work done. So my husband helped him hang drywall for 2 days in exchange for him building me a computer out of things he had laying around (he grabs old stuff from work, refurbishes them, and sells them on ebay and such). I ended up with a very basic tower....it's mostly 10 year old parts with stats equivalent to a $3-400 newer computer. But he also gave me a flat screen monitor and all the basic periphery and I added a 23" flatscreen monitor I found for sale on Facebook for cheap. Between that setup and my laptop, I've been having a great time. I work one online job on the desktop, typically, while I turk on my laptop. But some batches I'll use the desktop for the extra real estate of the dual monitors. I've had this desktop now for about 6 weeks I think. Last week, the fan on the graphics card went out. He gave me a new graphics card. It worked for 2 days and now won't turnn on. My next-door neighbor has a small town computer repair shop and says that the power supply is shot and needs to be replaced. So my geeky friends, if you've stuck around this long... 1) At what point is it rude to keep going back to friend's husband to see if he has more replacement parts laying around? 2) How much money do you put into a 10 year old computer before it's not worth it? Since we're still broke, if we opt not to continue messing with this computer, I'll likely be back to turking just on my laptop again. It's hard to go back, but I know it can be done. I do feel like i'll earn less, but I'm no power turker, so I'm not sure the "more" I'd make is worth the splurge when there are other bills to pay. Ya know? I dunno. I'm very frustrated. I'm feeling like we got the bum end of this arrangement, but my friendship is important to me, so I'm likely not to gripe either. You get what you pay for, right? *sigh*
same rnr script for the mature images works on this as well by marking everything non related, makes them much faster

This all sounds like you're just wanting to vent and already know the answers, honestly. (which is fine) Your first question isn't computer related and is more of a judgment call you will have to make based on the history and status of your relationship. If you're pretty close friends and he knows you're broke, I'm sure he would understand that you're asking for spare parts out of necessity. For the second question, its the equivalent of a 10 year old car. At what point do you stop buying parts to repair it and just buy a new one? Probably when you can afford it. Until then, you have to keep buying the cheap replacement part that failed and hoping it buys you some more time until you can save up for a new one. Power supplies are not very expensive. I just purchased my 750W unit from a Slick deal (www.slickdeals.net) for $70 that had a $10 instant coupon and has a $20 mail in rebate. A small system like yours would probably suffice on 450W but 550W would be better. If your friend can't come up with a spare part, I would monitor slickdeals and do some researching on Newegg & Amazon. A new 450W-550W PSU should be around $50. Also, if your neighbor has a repair shop, he should have those in stock around that price and might can cut you a deal on one. Replacing them is super easy. 4 screws to mount it and plug everything into where you see the old cords plugging into. I hope it all works out. Good luck.
What did the computer actually do as it failed? weird images or blocks on the screen? A video card doesn't always need a fan..Power supply? Or a bad connection? Tough question..Being poor sucks, I know..[a quote] The idiot is always 100% sure and the Genius never knows.. And 10 year old computers aren't a good idea to spend money on unless you have a contract with Government. Gosh..To ramble..If the dude has all this stuff laying around to build these old pc's, does he have another power source he has saved the landfill he would give you?

saw the math word problems, looked at clock (2am), returned. idc if its a buck, its way too late for that nonsense.
O If it actually is the equivalent to a 10 year old computer, then its terrible. Anything more than 3-4 years old is beyond outdated, sure you can keep older components alive and they will last, but a 10 YO CPU is ancient, you cant really update it or the MOBO. Yeah if he gave you 10 YO parts then you got the Bum end of the deal. If you buy a processor today, top of the line its going to be obsolete in 2 years max, it will still be serviceable a few years later and in working order, but 10 years later but its going to be 3-4 generations out of date.
What is your definition of "outdated"? Do you mean "outdated" in the sense that: - It's not what the cool kids are using now. - It's unable to compute processes it was formerly able to. - Its speeds are no longer tolerable. Or what exactly?
